Smart Meter - Single Phase
The 'MainsTalk' Smart Meter uses Power Line Carrier (PLC) technology to transmit meter reading data over the existing electricity cable network.

The Meter
Installation of the 'MainsTalk' meter is identical to that of conventional meters so there is no need for additional wiring. The 'MainsTalk' meter has an integral 100Amp contactor to enable remote disconnection / reconnection of the power supply. The meter can also be remotely switched to operate as a standard kWh Credit Meter or in pre-payment mode; effectively two meters in one.

The Local Controller
This is the data concentrator installed on site and connected to all three phases of the low voltage network. The Local Controller automatically collects and stores important meter data such as kWh readings, half-hourly profiles as well as a record of payments for pre-payment customers. This valuable information is then automatically downloaded to the customer's PC overnight via the telecoms network making it available for instant analysis the following morning. The system can be scaled according to the customer's requirements using multiple Local Controllers at different sites.

The Regional Controller
The Regional Controller is the system software and acts as the control centre allowing users to take full advantage of many powerful operations remotely including meter configuration, disconnection / reconnection, credit transfers (for prepayment customers) and direct meter enquiries etc. The software also incorporates many useful reports for financial analysis and audit purposes and an Export Data facility is also included for linking directly to customer specific applications.
